Writeon 2021 Critic-in-Residence
Research and writing
between August 1st - September 6th, 2021.
Applications are open for the WriteON 2021 Critic-in-Residence. In partnership with the Calgary Public Library, this residency is an opportunity for a WriteON writer to produce research around the role of public infrastructure at a neighbourhood scale. Selecting a community library location in Calgary as a point of departure, take a critical lens toward the relationship between the public realm and the community. This residency is an opportunity to research the community and develop a critical reflection that addresses a challenge to public infrastructure.
What urban design barriers affect community access in the area?
How does the community self-identify and what is the role of design in shaping the experience of feeling connected?
Use the writing skills developed in the WriteON workshops to develop and publish a critical essay. The community library becomes your hub with defined access to Library staff and digital services that will support you in fostering connections to further your research. The successful applicant will receive a research and writing fee of $2,000 CAD.
From this residency, you will produce a critical essay for publishing on FOLD, and will be asked to participate in a public “Meet the Artist” discussion in September, 2021. This residency is produced in partnership with the Calgary Public Library and made possible with the support of Calgary Arts Development.
*In-person resources at the library may be unavailable or restricted due to Library and Provincial Health & Safety Guidelines related to COVID-19.
